How to Search and Claim Unclaimed Property in Washington State

The state of Washington has its own unique searchable database right on their website. Their results can be limited in the information they provide, as only ten results show up on each page. Be sure to use our search strategies to ensure you are getting the best search results. After entering the name you are searching for, click on any matches to show more detail of the account. These details include the claim number, reported name and address, who the property was reported by as well as a description of the type of property it is. The results also show a range of the amount for each claim broken down by, less than $10, $10-$25, $25-$50, $50-$100, and more than $100.

In order to claim you must then click pursue claim which will direct you to the state treasurer’s page to create an account (or sign in if you already have an account). The website will then prompt you to enter some information and in most cases upload proof of identity. Most claims can take up to 60 days to process according to the state website, with the exception of stocks and mutual funds which can take longer.

For tangible property that the state has collected, there are auctions periodically to empty the literal vaults of lost property. These items can include jewelry, currency, sports memorabilia and more. Items that have been in the custody of the state for 5 years or more are subject to auction. Proceeds for these items are then kept by the state as they await to be claimed by the rightful property owners. The most recent auction in June 2018 grossed over $1 million in total sales.

Unclaimed money finders or locators are individuals who will search and claim unclaimed property for you for a fee. Not all states allow these individuals to operate, however Washington does as long as they are registered to conduct business in the state. Washington also limits the amount these finders can charge, with one of the lowest totals at 5% of the total claim.
